Last night I attended the first class of Crunch Fitness’ “Dance Your Ass Off.” The goal is to attend at least 6 of the 10 classes. You get your card stamped every time you go. At the end, if you attend at least 6 classes, you are entered into a pretty cool drawing where you get a night out on the town for you and three friends, with limo service.
The class was 1.5 hours of pure fun and sweat. There was a live DJ too! Here’s the best part…I felt like I was re-living a part of my childhood. The choreography was all Michael Jackson, and the memories that rushed in were almost overwhelming.
I remember getting the album Thriller - it was my first album ever! I remember opening it to reveal MJ with the baby tiger inside. I remember playing it over and over again - I was only 7 years old and yet it touched me so deeply. And then of course I begged and pleaded for my grandfather to buy me the Thriller Video, a must have. Back then, when MTV first started, videos had an appeal that for some reason they don’t have now.
Thinking about MJ is so bitter sweet. He was a big part of my childhood. I can remember his songs always playing in the background somewhere in that soundtrack of my younger self. And even while I was in school (as an adult) going to parties…at least one of his songs would play and everyone would go wild. However his later life was so filled with strife, to the point where most people forgot what a talent he was and the gifts he gave to the world.
It saddens me to think that such a great talent is gone from the world, and that so much negativitvy surrounded his life - from his greedy stage father to the controversies at the end. It saddens me to think that he couldn’t continue down the successful road he was first on with “Off the Wall” and “Thriller.” But I am happy that such an icon existed during my time.
Michael, you may not have been perfect, but you were truly great.

Friday, June 26, 2009 was the night of my very first fundraiser - Cineprov! FAME. After two months of hard work (planning and acquiring some pretty cool items for the silent auction), I can say that everyone had fun. I didn’t raise as much as expected, but it was a great experience and I did learn a lot about the process of this type of event as well as silent auctions.
I’m thankful to those who donated their products and services to this event: Atlanta Rocks!, Atlantic Grill, Crunch Fitness, Dolce Group, Engine 11, ESPN Zone, Every Which Way Organization, IHOP, Jamison Shaw Hairdressers, Knockouts - Haircuts for Men, Smooth @Lux Studio, and Stone Mountain Golf Club.
I also got help from some wonderful people and I’d also like to thank them here: Micah Benson, Bruce Gibson, and Adam Throne - thank you guys for everything.
And last but not least - to Cineprov! and the wonderful crew
Larry Johnson, Curtis Smythe, Kathryn Teates, and Monica King
You guys were hilarious! Thank you for your time and talent!
